Introduction to the African-Americans in Montana Index

Most of the names of African-American Montanans in this index were collected from the 1870, 1910, and 1930 U.S. Censuses.  Other names were found in “non-census” resources such as the vertical files, obituaries and Montana Newspaper indexes housed at the Montana Historical Society Research Center.  Some names were also collected from city directories and county histories although a comprehensive survey of these resources has not been undertaken. A few of these individuals will have a vertical file located with the Biographical Vertical Files in the Research Center. Staff have strived to determine the correct spelling of these names.  Married women who were enumerated in a Montana census before their marriage are indexed by their maiden name, when known.

Go to the Biographical Information page on the African-Americans in Montana Heritage Resources webpage to search for an individual by an alternate name (i.e. Mrs. John Jones) and/or to ascertain what census or non-census resource documents her.  This page also links to PDF and Excel files of the censuses and non-census information.
